Knights too much for Chiefs

LETRAN dumped Arellano University 97-84 yesterday for its 10th win and solidified its hold of solo third in the 95th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Bonbon Batiller led the Knights’ balanced offensive attack with 18 points, two rebounds, and four assists while brawny big man Larry Muyang and fellow slotman Jeo Ambohot chipped in 15 markers apiece.

Allen Mina, Jerrick Balanza, and Fran Yu also had 12, 11, and 11 points, respectively, as Letran snapped a two-game losing skid and hiked its record to 10-6.

The Chiefs absorbed their 11th loss against four victories.

The Knights also clobbered Arellano 81-72 in their first meeting last July 12.

With the runaway triumph, Letran atoned for its 63-75 loss to defending three-time champion San Beda University last Oct. 1.

Arellano went into the match armed with a 75-69 stunner over College of St. Benilde last Sept. 27.

In the other game, San Sebastian College rediscovered its winning ways, carving out a thrilling 62-59 decision over a hard-fighting Jose Rizal University crew.

With gunner Allyn Bulanadi being under the weather, wingman Alvin Capobres stepped up for the Golden Stags with 21 points spiked by two three-pointers, on top of eight rebounds, and two assists while JM Calma notched a double-double of 12 markers and 13 boards.

RK Ilagan also had 11 points for San Sebastian, which halted a three-game losing skid and improved to 8-6 for solo fourth despite a measly six-point performance from Bulanadi.

JRU dropped to 4-10 and was eliminated from Final Four contention along with Arellano and Emilio Aguinaldo College.
