ONE team’s perfect start ends today.
Defending three-time champion Arellano University and San Beda University square off in the 95th NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
The match is set at noon before Jose Rizal University tackles Mapua University at 2 o’clock.
The Lady Chiefs, who are seeking their fifth crown overall in the last six years, have won their first four games, including a 25-17, 25-18, 25-27, 25-13 victory over San Sebastian College last Jan. 25.
The win, however, hardly pleased Arellano coach Obet Javier.
“Actually, nag-relax ang mga player kaya nakakatakot. Hindi dapat ganoon ang isang team,” said Javier.
“Consistent kami dapat, at huwag mag-relax,” he added.
Graduating outside spiker Regine Arocha, reigning MVP Necole Ebuen, Princess Bello, Mikaela Juanich, and Carla Donato are expected to lead the Lady Chiefs’ charge in their bid to extend their winning run to five and break a tie with idle College of St. Benilde.
The Red Lionesses are armed with a 24-26, 25-19, 25-18, 25-17 triumph over Letran last Jan. 24.
San Beda will rely on Cesca Racraquin, Kimberly Manzano, Nieza Viray, and Trisha Paras as it aims to hike its 3-0 card.
The Lady Bombers absorbed a 23-25, 19-25, 23-25 loss to Lyceum last Jan. 25.
Dolly Grace Verzosa, Mary Ruiz, Sydney Niegos, and Riza Rose will be counted upon by JRU to improve its 1-3 record.
The Lady Cardinals are coming off a sorry 25-20, 26-24, 18-25, 12-25, 6-15 defeat to Perpetual Help last Jan. 25.
With a 1-2 slate, Mapua will lean on Lorraine Barias, Alissa Magallanes, and Jonina Fernandez.
