New cases spike to 2,076; death toll rises to 8,373


    FOR the first time in 19 days, the number of new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases breached the 2,000 mark yesterday, while 40 more deaths were reported.

    In its latest bulletin, the Department of Health said of the 2,076 new infections, 137 came from Quezon City while Laguna had 122 cases, Cavite 103, Batangas 96, and Angeles City in Pampanga 79.

    Overall, infections in the country rose to 429,864 while deaths now total 8,373, counting the 79 reported last Saturday.

    There were 10,579 new recoveries, bringing the total number of survivors to 398,624.

    The Department of Foreign Affairs reported that 11 more overseas Filipinos have been infected with the deadly virus. The Filipinos in 82 countries who have contracted the virus now stands at 11,676, with 7,497 having recovered and 845 having died.

    There were no new fatalities among overseas Filipinos.

    The bulk of the COVID-19 cases and deaths among overseas Filipinos remained in the Middle East and Africa with 7,535 and 551, respectively. But the DFA said there were 4,657 recoveries in both regions.

    Europe recorded 1,376 cases, 993 recoveries and 97 deaths.
