Data breach on 900K Facebook accounts probed

The National Privacy Commission (NPC) yesterday said it is investigating reports that 879,699 Facebook accounts of Filipino netizens were allegedly compromised as part of the large-scale breach affecting 533 million global users in the social media platform.

The National Privacy Commission (NPC) in a statement yesterday said it is currently validating this information on the Filipino Facebook users which it monitored on various web forums.

It said initial information showed the data leaked includes phone numbers, full names, location, e-mail addresses, and biographical information of users across various countries.

The NPC said it immediately reached out to Facebook’s Philippine Data Privacy Officer to gather more information on the matter.

The NPC meantime is encouraging Facebook users to be more cautious online by regularly changing passwords and activating a two-step authentication of accounts to safeguard their personal information.

The alleged large-scale data breach was initially reported by Business Insider on Sunday citing that a user in a low level hacking forum on Saturday published the phone numbers and personal data of 533 million Facebook users from 106 countries for free online. – Irma Isip
